Alignment theatre

This John Cutler post on LinkedIn hit a nerve. It’s a short post, so I’m pasting it all here to save you the click:

Remember…this isn’t the strategy (though it might look like some people believe it is the strategy). It is high level signaling, at best.

“Concise, high-level themes that can be delivered in under 15 seconds and remembered afterward. Broad enough that nearly every team can point to something they do and claim alignment, but not specific enough to determine priorities. Useful for creating the appearance of focus across large audiences.”

And this comment by Sarthak Goyal underneath it:

This is such an important distinction. A few punchy themes aren’t a strategy, they’re alignment theater. Real strategy forces trade-offs, sets clear priorities, and makes it obvious what you won’t do. If every team can claim they’re aligned, it’s probably too vague to guide decisions.
